Assessment Procedures

All children will be assessed on entry to the Junior School. The assessment process provides three functions: to ensure that the child will be able to access the curriculum, to provide information for parents on strengths and weaknesses of their child and to provide a clear starting point for teachers at the start of the year.

Tests will be conducted in English and Maths over the course of a morning. If a child is able to take the assessments during one of the assessment days, there will also be an opportunity for the children to interact as a group and begin to form friendships. The tests provide a wealth of information highlighting strengths and weaknesses and also help indicate where interventions need to be made. Once the tests are conducted, the Headmaster will contact parents to discuss results, and in all but a few exceptions, to offer a place.

Children in Year 5 seeking a place in Big Six (Year 6) will continue to take a further assessment in verbal reasoning. All tests are designed to assess both what each child can do and what they might do given the opportunities that WGJS and WGS would offer them.

Should parents wish to confirm a place sooner than the dates stated below, the Headmaster of WGJS is happy to make arrangements for your child to come in at your convenience and to take the tests. If you wish to take this opportunity, please contact Jane Morris in our admissions department on 01902 422939.
